Myrtus communis ‘Tarentina’ Tarentum myrtle
Myrtus communis ‘Tarentina’ Tarentum myrtle
An evergreen shrub from the vast Myrtaceae (myrtle) family . The myrtus is characterized by dense leathery dark-green elliptic leaves and cream colored ball shaped small flowers. When crushing the leaves between the fingers you can smell the familiar aromatic myrtus smell. The flower is followed by small round black fruits which are edible but aren't very tasty. The myrtus is drought and temperature change tolerant. Growing a myrtus requires very little care. At ‘Namer Bayaar’ we grow myrtus in shape of either a ball, a triple-ball or a pyramid. All in a uniform height of 30 cm and with a pot diameter of 12 cm. Interesting fact - the myrtus communis has many uses in our common culture: from serving as a healing herb, through adding spice to the mediterranean area and even in the jewish tradition.
